Age-related Macular Degeneration, Tampa, FL

At I-Care Optical, our experts can detect a range of eye conditions early on when treatment is most effective, including age-related macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of severe vision loss in people aged 50 and older. Our eye doctor Dr. Neil Patel can diagnose this condition in its early stages, often before you notice symptoms.

What is age-related macular degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that affects the central part of the retina, known as the macula. The macula is responsible for sharp, central vision, which is crucial for activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. In the early stages of AMD, you may not notice any signs. However, as the disease progresses, you might experience wavy or blurred vision or even blind spots in your central vision. Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and management of this condition.

Types of age-related macular degeneration

There are two types of AMD: dry and wet.

  • Dry AMD is the most common type, accounting for about 80% of all cases. It occurs when the macula thins over time, leading to blurry vision or blind spots in your central vision.

  • Wet AMD is less common but more severe. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow under the retina, leaking blood and fluid and causing damage to the macula. This can lead to rapid central vision loss if not treated promptly.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

While there is no cure for AMD or a way to reverse the damage, treatments are available that can slow its progression depending on the type of AMD. For dry AMD, lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and regular exercise can help slow the disease’s development. For wet AMD, treatments such as anti-VEGF drugs, laser surgery, or photodynamic therapy can help slow its progression and preserve your remaining vision.
